Martino this latest acknowledgement is the result of a lengthy search for different areas in Chile to produce wine It s interesting that we should be on the cover of Wine Spectator with a wine from the Choapa Valley planted in the Andes as this wine shows us the great potential for quality and diversity which exists in that area and just how little it has been exploited Another important point to highlight is that De Martino is the only winery which works with the Choapa Valley This has to do with the importance which the winery places on the search for new terroirs and the tireless efforts of the winemaking team to discover new winegrowing areas Currently De Martino has produced wines from over 350 different vineyards from Elquí to Bío Bío These awards emphasize the prestige which the Legado range has garnered over the last few years as well as the stress which the winemaking team has placed on demonstrating their origin by creating wines which come from the most outstanding and innovative valleys in Chile For Marco Antonio De Martino Commercial Director at De Martino winery this acknowledgement reaffirms all the hard work that we have done

dry years such as the 1997 1999 2003 and 2009 vintages which give for mature wines which are sweet on the palate the sort of wine which normally gets great scores in specialist magazines The sort of wine where a bottle for 10 might be greeted with applause at the dinner table but that is a struggle to drink between two The 2010 harvest was dry which is to say there was no rain in the summer and autumn months which in many parts of Chile and the world marks the great vintages If we add to this the fact that it was a colder year in almost of the valleys in Chile as well as the general fall in national production levels then we can definitely say that this is a great vintage for De Martino We are convinced that the long term work which we have done at De Martino vinifying many wineries on an industrial scale from the Elqui Valley to the Bío Bío and searching for and selecting great terroir for each of our wines has ensured that what for many might seem to have been a green low quality harvest for us is almost a textbook harvest for the wines which today we want to sell on the market Wines which are easier to drink soft fresh less alcoholic and with the maturation not falling into the over maturation to which our climate has accustomed us Now for this 2010 vintage the likelihood is that in those vineyards which have more fertile soils colder climates and higher than recommended production and even in places where the production per hectare is normally seven or eight tonnes the ripening will have arrived late or not at all Each area had to be analysed in a particular way
